What Is Up With A Thigh Gap Trend? If You Ain’t Got One & You Know It Say, ”I’m Real!”
What’s Up With Thus So-Called Thigh Gap Trend? If You Ain’t Got One & You Know It Say, ”I’m Real!”
My perfect twinkies are 4 years, 3 months, 2 weeks & 1 day old.
It’s just not at all attractive to me!
OK, so I have been hearing this lately. How it’s ‘cool’ to have a thigh gap in between your upper legs, between your thighs. I guess when you walk, stand with your feet together, pretend to be a perfect little Barbie Doll. But is it just me that not only thinks it is the dumbest achievment on the face of the planet for any girl or woman, but it doesn’t even look right? It looks ‘odd’ if you ask me.
Now when I was 5’6” and 98 lbs. during the period of time I had an eating disorder back in my mid 20’s, I am sure I must have had this because I had like no fat on my body, not even my chest for the first time ever. When I was overweight prior to the disorder, my husband called my chest ‘cannons’ and ‘big guns’ (they were humongous 😯 ), and I am certain I had nooo gap and didn’t ever notice. (Why did I feel the need to tell you all that .)
Maybe at one time I had some kind of gap, I never once thought about it in life until this, which is odd when I had such bad case of Body Dysmorphic Disorder for such a long, long period of time in life. I’m glad this isn’t an old trend, I guess. And so when I look down now or walk right now, do my thighs have that gap in between them? No. Do they touch? Yup. Do I care in the least? Nope. I’d rather have curves than go back to looking like an absolute, unhealthy skeleton again.
My twins are 4 and one is thinly built, (more so than the other), but both are ‘in shape’ muscle wise. They are very active, and it looks to me like there’s no gap there for Allie from mid to top thigh, and Annie had her legs open so there is a gap (we can all do that), but when closed no gap. They aren’t heavy in the least. I know they are only babies, but I’m just using it as an example. I don’t want to use my older daughter as one, but trust me..if anybody should have a gap, she should. It cannot be healthy!
Mikayla is super thin by nature. I’m always trying to force more food down her throat. She’s a string bean. So I am going to safely assume either you just have this gap naturally, or are quite underweight like many models are, which means everything else is too skinny to. Your breasts shrink (been there), you lose your hips and rear and get a ‘boy-like body’ unless you get plastic surgery. Is that what we should be striving for? I mean which would you rather look like… Twiggy or Marilyn Monroe? That’s a no-brainer for me.
I think this is putting out a very unhealthy message to girls. For some, I believe, this is unachievable anyway, as we don’t always lose weight where we want to lose it. So losing weight solely for this purpose, does that sound healthy to you? Trust me, kids today are SO impressionable. My daughter asked me at 7 years old if her thighs jiggled, as she grabbed at them with her hands pinching what she obviously was considering to be ‘fat’. I was appalled. I swiftly replied with, ”You have to have thighs first for them to jiggle 😯 .” It’s CRAZY!
We saw a teen who was between the ages of 16-19 I’d guess, in a super skimpy outfit. (I’d kill my daughter, ha ha.) I will admit she was drop dead gorgeous. I mean facially beautiful without make-up, so that was what I was jealous of. I didn’t dare say a word to my daughter, but you couldn’t help but look at her. Admit it ladies, we look at women more than we look at men for sure. ANYWAY, my daughter noticed her and was staring herself. Clearly the girl had a huge pair of implants. It was very obvious. I have friends with them, I know all about the things. Her waistline was teeny-tiny and her legs skinny. Her belly actually went in instead of out. She was a rail with a big chest. (Not a natural sight to see.) I wish I had a picture, but then again she is a kid, I wouldn’t post it anyway. Just try to visualize.
What bothered me badly was that I saw my 8 year old staring at herself and then this girl and then back at herself again. I’m 38, it’s OK for me to do it internally but this is a child. Tell her about a thigh gap, and I think she and 1/2 of girls her age would start noticing their thighs, which they have plenty of time to do in their 30’s and beyond. WHY should they be thinking about their bodies and appearance at all so young? It’s important to let girls know that regardless of their size they are beautiful and perfect as is.
This is all we need them to think about.
It’s trends like this that screw up the minds of young people. Us grown-up girls may all have our goals and wishes for our bodies, but this extreme thigh gap trend is nothing any sane one of us would be dieting to achieve with a vengeance because it’s just plain stupid, and it would require either surgery or heavy weight loss, in my opinion, to unhealthy levels for most everybody who just didn’t have the gap.
And do all models have it? Nope. Many do not. Even Target got caught photoshopping one of their young (like 15 years old) models into having a thigh gap. What does that show our impressionable youth? Nothing good. What are we doing now? Compromising our health for vanity. Or is it just a matter of very low self-esteem? Pretty sad though.
I say raise a glass, slap your thighs together, and set your goals on something with far more merit in life! You tell me your thoughts.
” The thigh gap trend, when will it end?” – Mama P.
PS- Next time your Victoria Secret catalog comes in the mail and makes you feel bad like it always did me, remember this. Most of their models are A cups naturally. (Believe it or not, it is true.) They admittedly use extra heavily padded bras and swimwear, special lighting and body makeup, and yes even photoshop, though they may not admit to that last one, but they admit to the 1st, in order to make those small frames look like they can be as they are, but with big breasts to boot. Without implants that super skinny with big boobs look is just an illusion.
Thigh gaps and stretch marks, love handles and more are photoshopped every day. The average woman should always keep this in mind while looking at herself in the mirror to compare. Don’t do it!
This is not a V.S. model, but it is a model showing how they add a gap and make her waist much smaller, made her boobs a bit bigger and brought them closer together, flattened her tummy, etc. Can we really believe what we see anymore?
This isn’t even one of the more extreme cases I have seen. It’s just an example.
*And don’t say, ”I’m just jealous”, those of you on a bender with this trend. I certainly am NOT!*
(FYI friends– I’m going away for a couple of days. It’s me & hubby’s tin wedding anniversary, so I am not dead. I will return shortly! I’ll miss you guys.)
