Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap Cabinet Lock Recall. Parents Listen Up!
3-24-2012
Listen up folks. This is a popular brand of safety lock for baby and childproofing called the Push ‘N Snap Lock by Safety 1st, and it has been recalled. It’s popular enough that I happen to have them on two sets of cabinet doors as I speak (type.)
Apparently, little ones can easily manipulate this lock and gain access to the dangerous substances you are trying to protect them against. Mine happens to be guarding cooking products and sweets, but for some it may be guarding cleaning fluids, household chemicals and poisons, among other things.
Their are also incidents of locks breaking, not working properly, coming damaged to start with, along with not amply protecting young ones from the inside dangers of some cabinets. Nearly 900,000 units of these Safety 1st locks, made by Dorel Industries, are involved in the recall.
To date there have been 200 reports of damaged locks, and 140 incidents of children ages 9 months – 5 years being able to open the locks and gain access to potentially harmful substances. A few with consequences, such as poisoning. No fatalities have been reported. All children who were treated were later released.
The recalled models were MANUFACTURERED, which doesn’t mean only sold, between January 2004 and November 2010. Affected model numbers are listed below, so check all of your locks out, as I will do in a few moments myself.
Recalled lots numbers: 48391 and 48442

The Dorel Juvenile Group released this comment: “Any recall is unfortunate but we act quickly to ensure the safety of children.” Indeed. I think I’ll stick with the magnetic locks I bought recently after my cousin had raved about them. They seem to be foolproof, and no one can see them.
Have a happy weekend!
