No More Drop-Side Cribs For Sale In The USA + Higher Safety Standards Imposed!
6-28-2011
Starting TODAY…there will be no more drop-side cribs for sale in the USA! This means the only cribs you will find in stores and online for purchase, will be fixed side cribs.
They pose a host of potential dangers to babies and toddlers, and have been proven lethal too many times, meaning not just injuries, but also child deaths.
I think this is terrific as much as I used to appreciate the drop-side models with my sons. We just didn’t realize the dangers back then. So many for sale were drop-side only in those days.
The ban takes effect as of literally right now, (today June 28th, 2011), and it is deemed to be one of the most significant changes in child safety in decades. Several dozen children have died due to these cribs over the past 11 years, not to mention before that. That’s MORE then enough in my book to warrant such action. My only question is, ‘What took them so long?’
From now on, the new federal standard requires thorough, mandatory, safety testing for all cribs that are to be manufactured in the present and the future. Far more rigorous testing then in previous times.
They are also improving the standard of mattress safety supports that have been known to occassionally cave in should a toddler be jumping in the crib, loosening bolts, which can and have led to injury. Loosened screws have also made crib rails go down, and parents would not have known until it was too late, in most cases.
The new cribs won’t really look much different then the cribs you are used to seeing in stores in the past, however, they will ALL have fixed sides, and will be sturdier then any past models we have seen.
“After 30 years of having outdated standards, CPSC delivered on its promise and created the toughest crib-safety standards in the world”, said commission chairman Inez Tenenbaum. “Parents can now shop for a crib with confidence.” This is terrific news!
It unfortunately won’t bring back the precious lives lost along the way, so it’s bittersweet to some parents who have experienced such a crib tragedy, but it brings new hope to current and future parents, that at least their infants and toddlers will now be resting safe and sound.
