Is Orange Juice Safe For Our Children And Ourselves?
2-4-2012
Many adults, myself included, do love the flavorsome beverage, but I worry most about our kids who are the future of our country. Of our world! According to sources low levels of a banned pesticide has been found in a Brazil imported supply of O.J. which has already reached our store shelves.
However, the Food and Drug Administration claim that the levels are low enough for the public to not be worried about, and to continue drinking orange juice. There has been no recall issued, but should there be?
Now a large Florida supply has been found to be tainted with the fungicide carbendazim, which has been linked to birth defects in some rodents and in human cells in laboratories, and will soon reach American store shelves as well. That sounds just plain frightening to me.
Should Americans stop drinking orange juice altogether? At least for awhile? The governement says no, but what do you say? Since the FDA is still conducting their testing I’m personally not buying any more of it until I hear the outcome. Even then, I might still be wary.
“In this case, we’ve been really cautious in working with EPA to insure that these residues are posing no safety concern,” Michael Taylor, deputy director of the FDA, said Thursday. Right now they are saying the pestiside carbendazim is far below unsafe levels.
One can only wonder though. Do we really know what is safe in the long run? Also, do we really want to take the chance, eventhough there are likely many dangers we the public don’t even yet know about, or maybe were never alerted about at all. Hmm… I’m not one who personally believes that the government tells us EVERYTHING. Maybe not everything gets ‘leaked’, but who knows?
”We think it would be unduly disruptive of the food supply to try to withdraw that product from the market,” Taylor said. Obviously, no plans for any recall are being thought about at this time. It just makes you wonder, what might be the next problem with our imported food and beverages? Apple juice, orange juice…next? Scary to think about in this mother and blogger’s opinion.
Just food juice for thought.
