The twins are getting ready for their big b-day party tomorrow. Mama P. is busy!
Freedom to Fail? Does not sound right does it? I did not think so at first either, but then I realized how important it was to the growing up process. Kids need to learn from their mistakes and failures and we have to let them go through it.
It is much like learning to ride a bike. At first we want to keep hold of the bike knowing if we let go the child will fall off. We also know if we never let go the child will never learn to ride. The key is knowing when to let go.
There will be times when the child falls and scrapes a knee or elbow just like mistakes and failures in life. They should be used to assess what went wrong and how to do things differently next time. It is much like allowing your child to decide how much study time is needed before a test. The child has a choice that will effect the outcome of the test.
With the right amount of studying she will make a good grade. If she chooses to do something other than study she will make a bad grade. Then there are positive or negative consequences that follow. Giving our kids the opportunity to fail and learn from it while they are young is a great tool.
As they get older and become more independent from us they will have the skills to make better choices and if they do make a mistake or fail at something they will know how to handle it by pulling themselves up, trying again or making a better choice the next time.
Watching your children grow up and make mistakes can be hard, but it is one of the best learning experiences they can have.
