Easter Is Quickly Approaching. What Are Your Family Easter Traditions?
Easter Is Quickly Approaching. What Are Your Family Easter Traditions?
4-22-2011
The bunnies are 13 months & 2.5 wks. old.
I was born Catholic, but raised Christian. (Long story.) So as you can imagine, Easter has always been a big holiday in my home growing up, and still is to this day.
We celebrate the resurrection of Christ in our own special ways, and I know that you have your own family traditions as well. Please feel free to share some of them with us. Not only would I like to hear about them, as would other readers, but you might just give us some new ideas to add to our own.
We always paint the Easter eggs a few days before the big day. It’s a lot of fun for us all, and of course, mama always has camera in hand. It definitely is a tradition that even at my rip old age, I have never tired from.
The twins were too small to even stay awake for the fun last year. I’ll share a few pics below. This year I’m sure they’d break every egg in sight, if given the chance to. (We are making them tonight, so we shall see.) I’ll try and involve them SOMEHOW.
Then the night before Easter Day, I read a few passages from the Bible to the kids, and discuss with them why the holiday was created, and why we celebrate it now. It’s a celebration of Jesus who died for our sins so that we all could be saved. Then we say our prayers of thanks.
On Easter morning my children awake to their big ‘ol baskets stuffed with goodies from top to bottom. Easter and Halloween, they get a ‘pass’ if you will to indulge. So do I
. Basically the same thing as when I was growing up. The twins are too small, so their baskets will contain a small toy or two. I have to search for something for them today, as obviously, candy is out of the question this year.
Then we have our special egg hunt. I do one inside, having the eggs hidden for when the kids wake up. Some have candy in them, some loose change, some change AND candy, and others have 1 dollar bills. Only 2 of them have 5 dollar bills, so I try and play fair and let my son and oldest daughter get one of each. He usually will comply to that even if he finds both.
Then we head over to my family’s neck of the woods where for a couple days out of the year anyway, everybody is in the holiday spirit without any malice or tension. It’s nice. My mom used to cook dinners for Easter and Christmas. Thanksgiving to, though I do like to be able to make one of those myself, for my own family, however lately she’s been having it catered.
Much less work, but to tell you the honest truth..she was never a very good cook, so I am quite happy the food comes from elsewhere, and is always DELICIOUS with a capital D. A capital everything! It may seem weird to me at times, and not as personal, not being traditionally ‘home made’, but it sure is yummy.
There with everybody we have yet another egg hunt, in my mother’s backyard, just because my daughter is crazy about it. I don’t really need to put much in them, thankfully. It’s more for the fun of it. Over there mom has plenty of places to hide those eggs, and there isn’t any risk of stepping in dog doodie, as she doesn’t have any dogs. We have 3, and a much smaller backyard.
We always say grace at Easter dinner, and because of my husband’s work schedule we haven’t made church for Easter in the last couple of years, but it was always a tradition in my home, and if he didn’t work until 11 am on Sundays, we surely would go together. Hopefully next year.
It helps the kids remember what the season is all about, though like I said before, I do read to them about Jesus, and how he died on the cross for us, then miraculously came back to life 3 days later.
Do your holiday rituals vary from these? Do you have others you would also like to share? If so, I’m all ears!!
Also, 2 questions for you if anybody knows the answers.
1) Why don’t we celebrate Easter every year on the same day that Jesus resurrected?
I have always wondered that.
2) Where did the bunny come from anyway?
The twins didn’t make it through the Easter egg making process last year.
**Foto Friday is being postponed, as I didn’t want to wait any longer on this post, and don’t have time to write two today.**

In response to your question about why Easter isn’t celebrated on the same day every year, it is because the date for Easter was traditionally linked to the Hebrew calendar and the date of Passover, which was based on the lunar cycle (there is a lot more history to all of that). Now we always celebrate Easter on the Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.
Hello love,

WOW Chrysa. You are such a wealth of knowledge…THANK YOU! That puts that question to rest:) I was just thinking, ‘Well then I guess it wouldn’t always fall on a Sunday then, not that it ‘has to’, but your explaination is MUCH more precise. I’m going to tell hubby that in the morning. He was curious as well.
xoxo Shelly
Wow! Just Wow! I am so very glad you said this! In the past six months, since I started reading blogs, and then started my own blog, it has lifted me out of mommy loneliness and into the world of friends who think like I do – and I’m really glad you found that as well. Women need to talk to women, it’s just plain and simple
So I’m following you from Blog Hop and would love a follow back – thanks!
