11 Month Old Twins Drown In Bathtub. The Importance Of Bathroom Safety.
11 Month Old Twins Drown In Bathtub. The Importance Of Bathroom Safety.

My lil’ giblets are 20 months & 2.75 weeks old.
As a mother of twins this story has really saddened me. Twins drowned in a bathtub in their home, after their mother left them unattended back in September.
Most moms reading this would think to themselves, ‘We would never leave an 11 month old child alone in the bath for even a second. What happened here? What was this woman thinking?’
Apparently, the young mother of 4 and 1 on the way, had gone into her bedroom and fell asleep while the twins were still sitting inside of the tub with rising water. They say the faucet was turned on, so either mom left it on, or the twins themselves turned it on. We may never know. Her story is sketchy at best. It’s just so tragic for the innocent babies!
As for mom, I fully understand the exhaustion of having twins, much less twins plus other kids, but that just is one time where napping is completely out of the question. The father was at work at the time of this horrible incident, however, has also been charged with neglect.
Perhaps, it’s in connection to the family’s living conditions. They were less then healthy for young children. Curdled bottles of milk, feces in diapers laying around, garbage and other unsanitary conditions were noted. The 6 year old sibling was apparently used to bathing her siblings, changing diapers, and doing feedings. How sad?! She was at school when the incident took place.
This obvious neglect which led to the demise of these beautiful twin infants is thought to be unintentional, but who the heck knows what the trial ahead may find. It’s still a crime, and 26 year old Melody Butt was charged with felony neglect, and other lesser charges. She faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Moral of the story is…NEVER, EVER, NOT FOR A SECOND leave an infant or toddler alone in a bath tub. It doesn’t take but a second to get scalded, start taking in water and begin drowning. If they can stand or walk, have a fatal slip and fall. Anything can happen, and faster then you can imagine. You don’t have to be napping, (DUH her
), just walking down the hall to grab a towel can prove deadly.
Have all the things you need for the bath out and ready ahead of time, and get your sleep when you can. During the babies’ nap time, and as much as you can at night. Ask others for help if you are feeling too exhausted to function properly. Just never sleep on the job. Look at what a tragedy can occur.
My heart goes out to the family of the twins, and the beautiful angel babies now up in heaven.

OMG, that is so sad and tragic. No matter how exhausted I was when my babies were that age, I would never have left them unattended. Geez, even at the ages of 4 and 7, I still don’t leave them in the tub unattended.
Those poor babies…may they rest in peace.
